    RAINBO – OVER, BUT NOT YET OUT!
    Rainbo (Health & Rights for African Women) announces his closure by the end of 2008. The organization, who was established in 1994, has worked mainly on empowering women to end female genital mutilation (FGM) & violence against women (VAW), improving Reproductive Health & Rights and bridging the gap between Policy & Practice (advocacy).

    Proclamation 158/2007. A Proclamation to Abolish Female Circumcision

    On the 20th of March 2007, Eritrea adopted a law banning the practice of FGM/C. The law introduces a penalty of 2 to 3 years in prison and a fine of 5 to 10 thousand Nafka for those found guilty of performing FGM/C. If it causes death, the penalty is increased to 5 to 10 years in prison.
    Those requesting the practice to be performed (parents, family members, etc.) are also punisheable with a fine and imprisonment from 6 months to 1 year.
